Land of the Säntis
This beautiful North Eastern corner of Switzerland is rich in tradition, scenery, and cheese! That's right the famous Appenzeller cheese is made from the high alp milk of the region, if you like cheese, you will love this one. 


The fantastic forealp 'Berg' can be seen from all parts of Appenzellerland, it casts its magical shadow on glades and forests which seem to remain  frozen in a time long since distant. Spending a day beneath the spell bounding spires of the Säntis leaves one with a long lasting impression of majestic its beauty.

Savognin Cathedral Summer View From our place on the north side of the valley we look out and across the town. It falls below us and then climbs the hill on the other side of the river. perched at about the same elevation from our viewpoint is the Baroque Savognin Cathedral. It is a huge building that by day and night is spectacular in all the changing light of day and seasons. This image was painted from a mid summer photo, it shows the cathedral and town in late afternoon light. A light haze from the warm day adds depth and coolness to the shadows. The road from Dell This composition of mountain, vanishing snow, and my family adding a splash of color intrigued me. There is an anticipation of the figures regarding the road ahead, which appears to almost vanish and then split at the upcoming hill. Does the road to take lead upwards through the forest, or descend to field below? It brings to mind the choices life often presents to you, do you take he difficult path that leads to greater heights, but unknowns, or the safe an secure lower route though familiar fields and pastures? For the painting I left the finer details a little uncertain, a little diffuse, using layers of transparent simulated paint with impressionistic styled short directional strokes. The Giovanni Segantini house, Savognin The world famous romantic painter lived in this house from 1886 through 1894. It's interesting not in that it's the only yellow house in town, but that it's not a farm house or associated with a barn, and that it has ornate decorations on it's exterior. For me I was intrigued that it always has birds on the roof, perhaps it is because of it's bright color that they flock to it. I like to think it's the ghost of Segantini that calls the black birds down from the mountains paying silent homage to a landscape that he and I find haunting in it's beauty.
